Description
|
Plurall by BEM (formerly known as Brasil em Mente from 2009 – 2021) is a cultural organization that promotes and encourages the vitality of Portuguese language within immigration contexts since 2009. From its diverse projects, Plurall has become a reference to teachers and researchers around the world while producing unique resources and materials, professional development, and cultural events.
Founded by Felicia Jennings-Winterle – Brazilian educator and independent researcher –Plurall originated from the work of the school Ciranda Cirandinhas, which developed educational and cultural programs in the metropolitan area of New York city from 2009 to 2014. |
Purpose
|
Our purpose is to develop and further capacitate educators that are involved with teaching Portuguese outside of its major centers (i.e., Brazil, Portugal, etc). We push forward a world movement of raising awareness about the importance and advantages of plurilingualism, especially that one that involves Portuguese language and the Brazilian cultures, articulating events, professional development, and conferences, as well as producing and commercializing specialized material and resources.
We create opportunities so that Portuguese can co-exist with other languages and cultures and represent additional, and differential means of communication and a source to raise global citizens. |
Accomplishments
|
Within 2009 e 2014 Plurall maintained programs in Portuguese for children and teenagers in the metropolitan area of New York city. In 2014 this unique experience was transformed into a pioneering Teacher’s Education Program in which more than 200 educators have shared their experiences. In turn, this program originated a specialized conference that will have its 7th edition in 2023. In addition, Plurall created the Day of Portuguese as Heritage Language, celebrated on May 16th around the world since 2014. Furthermore, Plurall produces didactic material to the teaching of Portuguese since 2012. Editora BEM ‘s catalogue includes a literacy program that has been adopted by the Dual Language Program Portuguese / English of the city of Framingham, Massachusetts.
