Introduction to Language Pedagogy
In a few words…
This course aims to present fundamental concepts to a language teacher: language, identity, and culture. We will discuss social and biological aspects of language, giving to the teacher notions of language aspects, language acquisition and development, as well as specificities of language grammar, based on its functional in society, mediated by characteristics and human advantages/limitations. This will be done using various perspectives, specially those that see language as an inextricable compound of cultures, identities and discourses, while we discuss various ideologies that based such views.
How does it work?
In its typical path, this course is developed in two parts, each having 5 weeks of discussion. In this summer course proposal, the goal is to speed up this process, utilizing the model of inverted classroom (i.e., giving access to video classes and reading material, before the virtual meeting), as well as longer and more frequent meetings.
Target audience
Language teachers who work in various contexts, either monolingual or bi/multilingual, teaching Portuguese* or other languages.
*If the audience is predominantly made of Portuguese speakers, the course will be given in Portuguese. If not, in English and the video classes subtitled.
